Flavel, the eldest child of the Rev. Richard Flavel, depicted as 'an agonizing and famous pastor,' who was occupant progressively of Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, Hasler and Willersey, Gloucestershire (from which last living he was shot out in 1662), was conceived in or around 1627 at Bromsgrove. 

Having gotten his initial training at the schools of the area, he entered University College, Oxford, at an early age, and picked up a decent notoriety for ability and diligence.

On 27 April 1650, he was sent by 'the standing board of Devon' to Diptford, a ward on the Avon, five miles from Totnes, where the priest, Mr. Walplate, had turned out to be weak. On 17 October 1650, after examination and the proclaiming of a 'trial sermon,' he was appointed Mr. Walplate's partner by the classis at Salisbury. He kept on serving at Diptford for around six years, succeeding the senior clergyman when he kicked the bucket, and charming himself enormously to the general population, by his sincerity, as well as by his simple dealings with them in the matter of tithes.
