John Townsend was conceived in 1952 in Smithfield, North Carolina, and experienced childhood in Wilson, North Carolina.[3] Townsend has a Bachelor of Arts degree in brain science with distinction from North Carolina State University, a Master of Theology degree from Dallas Theological Seminary (likewise with distinction), and a PhD degree in clinical brain science from Rosemead School of Psychology, Biola University.Townsend helped to establish the Minirth-Meier Clinic West and filled in as its clinical co-chief for ten years. The facility worked treatment focuses in thirty-five urban communities in the western United States.

Townsend established the Townsend Institute for Leadership and Counseling, giving graduate preparing in Organizational Leadership, Executive Coaching and Counseling, based at Huntington University in Indiana in 2015.Townsend co-has a broadly syndicated radio program, New Life Live.[citation needed]  Townsend and his family live in Southern California.
